Asian Palm Civet

What is a Asian Palm Civet?

An Asian Palm Civet is a small mottled grey and black toddy cat, as that's another name they are known by. They are from the Viverridae family, and found in South and Southeast Asia. They weigh 2 to 5kg and they are about 53cm long and tail reaching 48cm long.

What is their life cycle?

The female civet can conceive up to 3 youthful kittens. This happens (being pregnant) for a few months. The toddlers are weaned by their mother until they are solid enough to battle for themselves. They can live to be 20 years old but rarely lives to this age. Kittens are born in tree hollows or stone fissure.

Where do they live?

The Asian Palm Civet can be found in South and Southeast Asia tropical rainforests. They are warm blooded creature. They can exist in thick woods, agrarian regions and even close by people. A good hint to where to find them is near fruit and fig trees grow and undisturbed vegetation.

What is their diet?

They eat fruit, insects, eggs and small reptiles. They are also Omnivores. Asian Palm Civets enjoys eating many things such as reptiles like rodents, reptiles, snakes and frogs. But more fancy foods like coffee cherries are also a nice treat for a Civet.

Coffee Beans -

Asian Palm Civet love to eat coffee cherries, which they eat the outer fruit while the bean passes through their digestive tract. This is the most expensive coffee bean called Kopi Luwak, and is $100 per pound.

How do they behave?

Asian Palm Civet is awake at night and goes out for food. They are out at 6pm in the evening till 4am in the morning. They are active at night and sleep through the day. After searching for food they then like to find a resting tree, keeping to the same tree each time. Resting trees with vines and holes are best for a Civet.

Who are they related to?

Although the cat like appearance and behaviours they are not feline. They are more related to weasels and mongooses. Only of a Asian Palm Civet has no rings on its tail, but the face appears as a raccoon.

Altogether an Asian Palm Civet is the perfect unnoticed animal with night time skills. They are so cute and interesting to look at, and amazing to watch what they do. As I have one at my college I love going into the twilight room to see what he's up to :0)
